Praise the Lord
By Eddie & Barbara Lofton
Psalm 113:1-9
When we first came from Northeastern Mississippi to Zion, Illinois in early 1949, the city was characterized by the fact it had been established as a Holy City. A Christian leader who desired a place special set apart for worship of God had developed the city. Everyone who lived in Zion worked and worship in Zion. Unfortunately, not everything worked out as the founders had desired, and by the time we arrived the city was in the middle of some changes.
I have had many years to consider the events in Zion, and to examine the documents relating to the establishment of Zion. I have discovered a true desire from worship and praise directed toward the one Holy God. However, in an effort to bring praise and honor to God, some got side tracker and lost their way.
Praise bands and praise groups are very popular today and throughout the history of the Christian church have found their place in our history. Just as the writer of the Psalm says in our scripture, the praise of the Lord should fill our day and night. Every event should provide opportunity for praise to the Lord; however, there are occasion when we find it difficult.
The question comes to our mind, to who is our praised due? For what are we to bring or present our praise, and where are we to praise God? Are we only obligation to praise God for the good, which comes to our lives? Perhaps will there be occasions in our life such as with Job when we must praise God without understanding our conditions.
Are we able to bring true praise to God, even when we are not happy and our hearts are burdened? For what do we praise God when there is bad news, death, destruction, hunger, and other misunderstood events in our lives? Are we only to bring our praise within the congregation when everything is good and pleasant, and all things are going well?
How can we be so strong, and not give into complaining, and blaming God for these bad things happening in our lives?
Praise is the beginning of our release, even in our darkest hour, when there seem to be no way of escape. Jesus Christ face that hour alone there in the garden the night when he was taken to be put to death. However, just as He we have the same Father who is watching over us day and night, providing care and security.
When we place our trust in the Heavenly Father and direct our praise directly to Him, He will fulfill Psalms 113:1-9, making us completely comfortable with Him We will be able to trust Him and give Him praise, because of who He is.
We love you all in Jesus Christ our Lord,
